Revelation Cabernet-Merlot – 2014

Revelation Cabernet-Merlot – 2014

God bless Trader Joe’s!

This wine is the best wine you can buy for $5.99 a bottle! In fact, this would be a really solid wine at $15.99 a bottle. I honestly don’t know how they make this for what you can buy it at TJ’s but this is the go-to house-wine for our place.

I like just drinking this by itself at 65-68˚F, but is also pairs very well with stews, duck, steak and hard cheeses.

The biggest contributor to the price is likely where the grapes are grown and certainly not the quality or the craftsmanship that goes into it.  Pays d’Oc indicates where the grapes were grown, or in this case, not grown.  Pays indicates no specific appellation and d’Oc refers to the Languedoc area. [Thanks to Arnaud for his help.]   This gives the winemaker more flexibility with regards to grape varietals as well as vineyard sourcing for their grapes.  Languedoc does have some twenty-five different appellations.  However, wines that do not reflect one of these may instead reflect the grape varietals used in the wine or the proprietary name on the label.  (The Wine Bible, Karen MacNeil, p. 296.)

    1. Hi Julia,

It’s back! Not quite the same as I remember 2014 – but it may get better with time. . . as Bordeaux wines tend to do.

    1. Good news for Revelation fans – this wine is back in its 2015 version!

I recommend picking up a bottle or two at your neighborhood Trade Joe’s before buying every case in the store. (I know for $6, it’s hard to compete outside of a few finds at your local CostCo.)

The new vintage is still a good complement with food. At the same time, I’m still warming up to it and it hasn’t had the same, “Whoa, this is $6?!?!” as the 2014 model.

Grab a few bottles and let me know what you think.

  2. I agree with your conclusion regarding the geat value of this Revelation Cabernet-Merlot at TJ. However, let me point out that Pays d’Oc does not mean Country Wines. It is simply a old name to refer to a southern region of France, aka Languedoc, located between Provence and Gironde (Bordeaux). Wines from Pays d’Oc do not carry the cachet of Bordeaux Wines and therefore are sold at a lower market price.
